  8.7 IRIMO¢ s RADAR PROJECT :

For almost 25 years IRIMO has had weather and wind radars , seven WF2 wind radar and one weather

radar type 42 from placcy , England .

Now with the new generation of weather radar there has been a Trust Fund Agreement between the

Islamic Republic Of Iran Meteorological Organization and WMO for the Implementation of technical

assistance projects , the establishment of the weather radar network for a total contribution of US$ 7

million  .   The project will be implemented over a period of 4 years , in two phases .

The main goal of this project is the establishment of a network of rainfall , detection of storms and

significant weather changes in areas that are known to experience large floods causing severe damages

and loss of life and property during the last years .

This will be achieved through the installation of an operating weather radar system consisting of 12 weather

Doppler radars (S and C Bands ) .

Based on studies and discussions among the IRIMO senior managers and also considering economical and

other factors , IRIMO has prioritized the regions that need weather radar coverage . Highest priority is given

to western and north   west regions ( Kermanshah  , Ahvaz and Tabriz areas )  and regions   around the   capital

Tehran which has the highest population density in the country .

In first step , an expert from canada was elected as consultant for IRIMO’s radar project and a site survey was

done in the region for deciding upon the number and technical configuration of the radars .  Nevertheless   , an

Iranian expert was also assigned to this project .

IRIMO in a meeting with Mr. Azab senior director of TCP ,WMO , decided on having two  S-band and one C-band

radar with Doppler capabilities for the high priority regions .

The technical configuration of the radar system has been sent to several radar companies.

The proposals of the companies are going to  be sent to WMO and there will be a bid  evaluation   by  WMO  and

IRIMO’s consultants in Nov. 1999 .

For upgrading the radar working with the new radar technologies and giving them technical ability ,    the following

work has been done :

- Holding three training courses on radar by Dr.Gholestani, Iranian consultant to the project

- Studying and discussing scientific papers

- Holding a 2 day workshop in Tehran by a German Company

Furthermore, there has been two visits from radar sites :

- A visit to GEMATRONIC in Germany and a view of the ability of Gematronic products and their latest development .

- With the kind invitation of people’ republic of China , a delegation headed by me made the Chinese a visit to two radar

stations one is a NEXTRAD Doppler radar operating in S-band WSR-88D and another old radar station . China has also

produced a Doppler radar which is now working in Hefei ci
